Fabricating and Installing Camper Mounting Brackets

One of the important tasks in this stage of our DIY camper build is fabricating and installing the mounting brackets that secure the camper body to its trailer.

Getting the mounting system right is essential because the camper needs to remain securely attached while traveling. We fabricate our brackets and install them as part of the ongoing construction of our homemade camper.

When planning your own camper build, consider how the body will attach to the trailer, the materials you’ll use, and how the mounting points will handle the loads and movement experienced on the road. The mounting system should be designed and installed appropriately for your specific trailer and camper structure.

Cutting the Roof Vent Opening

Proper ventilation is an important consideration when building a small camper. In this episode, we cut the opening for our roof vent, making room for another important feature of our homemade camper.

Cutting into a finished roof requires careful measurement and planning. The opening needs to match the vent’s installation requirements, and the surrounding roof structure must remain adequately supported.

Weatherproofing is also critical. Any roof vent installation should use the appropriate sealant, flashing, and installation method recommended for the specific vent to help prevent water from entering the camper.

Installing the Interior Wall Paneling

With the camper structure coming together, we continue working on the interior by installing the wall paneling.

Interior paneling helps give a homemade camper a more finished appearance and covers the underlying framing and insulation. Careful measuring and cutting help create a cleaner fit around corners, openings, and other interior features.

During a DIY camper build, it’s worth planning panel placement and fastening locations before installation. This can help avoid unnecessary cuts and make future finishing work easier.

Installing a Window in Our Homemade Camper

We’re also installing a window in our DIY camper. A window can bring natural light into the interior and help make a compact camper feel more open.

Window installation requires accurate measurements and careful attention to sealing. The opening needs to fit the window properly, and the installation must be weatherproofed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

For anyone planning a homemade camper, it’s a good idea to choose your windows early in the build. That allows you to account for their dimensions and placement when framing and sheathing the walls.

Our Homemade Squaredrop Camper Build

We’re building our custom squaredrop-style camper on a 5-foot-by-10-foot trailer. Throughout this project, we’ve been working through the different stages of construction, from framing and sheathing to insulation, electrical installation, exterior sealing, and finishing.

This episode focuses on several practical construction tasks that help move the project forward:

  • Fabricating and installing camper mounting brackets
  • Cutting the roof vent opening
  • Installing interior wall paneling
  • Fitting a window into the camper body

Each project is another step toward creating a functional homemade camper for our future camping trips.

Tips for Planning Your Own DIY Camper Build

If you’re thinking about building your own camper, a little planning can save time and help avoid costly mistakes.

Measure before cutting. Double-check the dimensions of windows, roof vents, and other components before making openings in your camper body.

Plan structural attachment points. Consider how the camper body will attach to the trailer and ensure the mounting system is suitable for the intended loads and road conditions.

Protect against water intrusion. Roof vents, windows, and other openings need proper sealing to help keep moisture out.

Think ahead about the interior. Plan panel placement, wiring routes, insulation, and access to components before closing up the walls.

Use suitable materials and installation methods. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for windows, vents, sealants, fasteners, and other components, and verify that structural and electrical work is appropriate for your design.
